CAPE BRANDIES Considering the fact that South African´s consume over 45 million litres of brandy each year, we are fortunate to have a thriving brandy industry, right here on our doorstep. Fortunate, not because it gaurantee supply, but because it give us the opportunity to experience all the intecracies of a highly regulated industry. The South African Brandy Foundation has launched 2 brandy routes incorporating 22 distilleries. Villa10 is within 30 minutes of a Brandy Museum, 11 wine estates that produce some excellent brandies, and also a major producer, all part of the Western Cape Brandy Route. Backsberg Cellar Estate Near Stellenbosch Since 1991 Backsberg have been producing a high-end brandy through double distillation in a still purchased from Cognac in France. Harvested from well seasoned Chenin Blanc-vines, meticulously distilled in an antique copper alembic potstill first used on the farm in 1849 and matured for seven years in French oak. The site of the original 18th century potstill was traced through extensive research and its modern counterpart is one of the many visual attractions of the tasting room.
